Toronto — It’s a cosmopolitan city of colorful neighborhoods, great restaurants and a fabulous film festival. And it’s known for an extensive subway system, with plenty of accessible stops to dip down into and catch a ride.

But today I’m walking, and looking up.

Paul Theroux: The Tao of Travel

Legendary travel writer Paul Theroux talks to wandermelon about his latest book, The Tao of Travel: Enlightenments from Lives on the Road.

Paul Theroux has spent 50 years traveling the globe and sharing his adventures with readers. The prolific travel writer first gained notoriety with The Great Railway Bazaar, an account of his train travel between London and Japan. He has also written 28 novels from regions like Britain, Patagonia, the South Pacific, Asia, and Africa.

The Travel Photographer Is On Tumblr!

As I shared a few days ago, I had grabbed The Travel Photographer brand name in as many blogs and social sites that I could…and I’ve now decided to air some of my images which are on display on The Travel Photographer Tumblr blog.

As you’ll see, I’ve used the theme known as Boston Polaroid, which allows the largest size of images I’ve seen on ready-made blog platforms. I’ve also uploaded on it photographs that received the Flare “treatment” which I’ve lauded its “fun” factor before.

We live in something of a golden age for travel. There’s no doubting that it’s as easy as it’s ever been for many of us to explore the globe, hopping from country to country and continent to continent with nothing more to worry about than grabbing a few visas and how long our cash will hold out. With transport prices likely to rise and the planet looking in more and more trouble environmentally, there’s no telling how long such freedoms might be affordable. So how did we get here?

Mention Jordan and the image of Petra comes to mind. Not just Petra, but specifically its iconic rose-red building, the Treasury or al Khazneh. As a symbol of Jordan, the Treasury is strikingly stunning; but it is also just one of the thousands of impressive rock-cut buildings in the ancient city. In Petra, there is no shortage of archaeological findings, caves and rock art. And if you’re not a history buff, then take your time to explore the sandstone canyons and network of hiking trails in the surrounding Wadi Musa.
