Cooking vacations in France
Q: I have a significant birthday coming up and for my celebration I’d like to participate in a cooking school in France for about five days that is taught in English. Discussion of wine would be a plus. I prefer country cooking to more haute cuisine. Suggestions?

A: Gourmet on Tour offers more than 80 culinary and wine vacations in the United States, Asia, Morocco and Europe, including nine in France. The “Escape to Provence” tour offers two-night, three-night and five-night courses. The five-night course starts at 1,740 euros (about $2,465) a person for a double room in the low season (March 12 to April 22 and Oct. 2 to Nov. 12). Among other activities, it includes three dinners and daily breakfast; four cooking classes followed by lunch; winery visits and wine tastings; and visits to culinary destinations such as an olive-oil mill. Tours and classes are conducted in English. The company also offers gastronomic tours/cooking classes in Bordeaux and Provence. www.gourmetontour.com
The chef Olivier Berte runs a range of cooking workshops at Les Coulisses du Chef in Paris. Classes are usually offered with an English-speaking assistant, last about three hours and are given 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, Prices start at 100 euros for a single class or 440 euros for five. www.coursdecuisineparis.com
The famous Cordon Bleu offers “Short Courses,” with an English translator, which range from two hours to four-day classes at its Paris campus, including the two-day “French Regional Cuisine” in November, exploring the origins and essence of cooking from various regions of France. Classes, which run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., are 470 euros (a four-day class is also available for 930 euros). See more options at www.cordonbleu.edu
